SOCKETS AND RECEPTACLES

GHzBGA sockets

Our high performance GHzBGA sockets join Ironwood's line of sockets and receptacles for BGA, MGA, PGA, QIP, and QFP packages. We also offer parts that provide sockets for in-circuit emulators.

Sockets and Receptacles Product Line Summary

Ironwood's line of sockets and receptacles are grouped in the following part families:

  • GHz BGA Sockets
GHz BGA socketsIronwood's GHz BGA sockets are ideal sockets for prototyping, test applications, and field-upgradeable designs. These patent pending sockets are the smallest, fastest, and densest BGA sockets available. Direct mount versions of the sockets offer the highest performance and completely eliminate soldering. The zero insertion force (ZIF) chip placement system can also provide heat sink capability.
  • In-Circuit Emulator Support
QFE to VG230 Emulator AdapterIronwood's line of emulator adapters, surface mount feet, PGA male/male sockets, and extenders provide convenient, yet highly reliable connections to in-circuit emulators.
  • PGA Sockets (0.1" pitch)
Over 100 patterns of our PGA (0.1" pitch) pin array sockets are available, with array sizes ranging from 5x5 to 26x26 pins, including IPGA. Three pins types are available, including wire wrap. PGA ZIF sockets are available for arrays sizes 10x10 10 25x25.
  • MGA Sockets (0.05" pitch)
0.05" MGA Female/Male SocketThese 0.05" pitch mini-grid (MGA) pin array sockets are typically used as mating connectors to many Ironwood parts such as SMT emulator bases, probe boards, and extenders. We offer them in several Female/Male and Male/Male configurations. Our MGA sockets and receptacles all use gold plated pins and connectors.
  • SMT Land Sockets (BGA and QFP Chip Carriers)
BGA Land Socket (Male)Our BGA and QFP surface mount "land sockets" , or chip carriers, are a cost effective, highly reliable alternative to ZIF sockets. Our surface mount lands are typically isolated, both mechanically and thermally, from the terminals. This improves reliability because IC devices are not soldered directly to high mass pins or female connectors.

Definitions and General Information

Ironwood offers the industry's widest array of high quality sockets and receptacles. Our parts utilize gold plated pins and through-hole connectors exclusively.

ZIF and Production Sockets
ZIF sockets, such as as our GHzBGA sockets ,allow for repeated hand insertions of IC devices. Production sockets are less expensive than typical ZIF's, but do not hold up to as many insertion cycles.
Land Sockets
We use the term "Land Sockets" to refer to a part that provides SMT lands for soldering an IC device onto. Land sockets present a pluggable interface to one of our compatible sockets or SMT emulator feet. Land Sockets Land sockets are a very cost effective alternative to large bodied ZIF sockets. We offer land sockets for BGA and QFP packages.
Socket Receptacles
"Socket receptacles" are parts that present a pluggable female interface. Depending on the pattern, they can be used with our land sockets, industry standard ZIF and production sockets, or other parts with compatible arrays of pins. Socket receptacles typcally plug into one of our surface mount emulator feet, although we do offer some QFP socket receptacle parts (RE-QFE) that are surface mounted directly to the target system.
